According to Axios, the U.S. Justice Department, TikTok and parent company ByteDance have reached a $400 million settlement to resolve allegations that the company violated children's online privacy laws. The deal clears TikTok of the allegations without further litigation or an admission of wrongdoing, and the Justice Department said the settlement is one of the largest recoveries ever obtained under the privacy law. The department said TikTok has made significant changes to its ownership, management, compliance functions and privacy practices since the lawsuit was filed in 2024, and said the settlement negotiations included stronger safeguards for youths, better age-related controls and more parental oversight. Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward called the settlement a major victory for American children and parents.
