【BTC market share 59.6%—this number hides something retail traders can’t quite see】
BTC market dominance refers to BTC’s market cap share within the entire crypto market. It’s currently 59.6%, and this figure has recently been used by many people to judge when the “altcoin season” will arrive.
The logic is simple: when BTC’s dominance rises, it means capital is concentrating in BTC and altcoins are being bled; when BTC’s dominance falls, it means capital starts rotating into altcoins and the market begins to broaden. You can imagine the whole crypto market like a seesaw—BTC on one end, all other coins on the other. When one side goes up, the other comes down.
But here’s the question—why is BTC’s dominance so high right now?
Recent data: over the past two days, inflows into ETFs totaled 800 million. Meanwhile, short positions have been liquidated by nearly 4 billion. This isn’t retail behavior—this is institutions buying BTC. They don’t trade MEME, they don’t chase hype. They simply and patiently buy BTC spot. When institutions enter, they first choose the asset with the best liquidity and the safest profile, so BTC’s dominance naturally gets pushed higher.
What does this translate to in real terms?
Altcoin season will come, but this time it may be different from before. In previous cycles, altcoin season was driven by retail traders: once FOMO kicks in, capital rotates quickly. This time, if altcoin season comes, it’s more likely that institutions buy BTC first, then after BTC stabilizes, some of that capital starts diverting into high-market-cap altcoins. The pace will be slower, and not all altcoins will get a chance—only those with real, practical use cases will be selected.
So what’s my mindset right now? My hands are itching for sure—many altcoins have already dropped by almost half, and it’s hard not to want to move. But I got trapped back in 2017 doing the same thing—buying the bottom right in the middle of the hill. My current judgment is: BTC dominance hasn’t started to fall yet, which means the capital is still on the BTC side. It’s not too late to consider switching once that signal appears.
Remember this: when BTC dominance starts heading downhill, that’s the signal altcoins are worth paying attention to. It’s not that the price dropped “a lot” and therefore it’s worth buying—it’s that capital is beginning to rotate.
Now, if you hold any altcoins, what’s your mindset? Are you willing to hold through this wave?
