After staring at on-chain data for a few straight days, I decided to rerun TermMax’s settlement mechanism and the Duration Mismatch (maturity mismatch) logic today. The deeper the calculations go, the more it feels like certain hidden structural risks are being covered up by current market hype.
Many tweets tout how “one-click leverage + locking in borrowing costs” is so convenient, but everyone seems to be deliberately avoiding one fatal question: in a fixed-term lending model, can it withstand extreme market liquidity plunges?
In a floating-rate lending protocol like Aave, position management is linear and continuous—so long as the pool has depth, liquidators can enter and close positions at any time. But in a fixed-term market, both lending and borrowing parties are locked into a rigid time window. If the underlying collateral suffers a sharp drop in value in the short term, and secondary liquidity can’t keep up, borrowers who want to close early to hedge have to eat enormous slippage and discounts on the order book. And if the market-making Curator doesn’t react quickly enough, bad-debt risk will be passed straight onto ordinary lenders who deposited into the Vault.
Back then, when Yield Protocol announced its shutdown and Notional made several adjustments to its architecture, they ultimately fell into the same trap: slicing liquidity into different maturity dates leads to extreme liquidity fragmentation.
Looking at active borrowing positions on-chain today, a significant portion is basically doing LRT or looped arbitrage on yield-bearing assets. Borrowers lock in a fixed low-interest loan to capture external yield, effectively freezing their financing costs. But at its core, this isn’t real-world lending—it’s pure interest-rate spread arbitrage. Once the external yield-bearing assets’ yield crashes abruptly, or the underlying assets de-peg, this borrowing demand can vanish within hours.
What also makes me skeptical is the risk-reward profile on the lender side. Ordinary users deposit funds to earn a fixed, predictable handful of annual percentage points, yet they still have to bear smart contract risk, the risk that the Curator strategy triggers losses, and the cost of liquidity being locked in extreme market conditions. The upside is capped—welded to a ceiling—while the downside risk is an uncapped exposure.
No matter how elegant the technical architecture looks, it must ultimately face the ruthless test of black swans. If a protocol’s prosperity relies purely on arbitrage loops, then once the market turns, the retreat back can be much faster than anyone imagines. #termmax @TermMax $ETH
