⚠️ Crypto investors in the UK may need to pay even more attention recently. In the 2025/26 tax year, HMRC (Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs) issued 81,172 tax warnings to users related to cryptocurrencies. Compared with roughly 65,000 the previous year, the number increased by about 25%; compared with 27,714 in the 2023/24 tax year, in just two years it has nearly tripled.
📩 The appearance of these letters also sends a very clear signal: the UK tax authorities are further strengthening their scrutiny of digital-asset transactions and earnings. Many people may think tax issues only need to be considered when crypto is converted into cash, but under UK rules, exchanging tokens for one another, using crypto assets to buy goods or services, and some types of gifting can all involve taxable events.
🔍 Even more noteworthy is that regulators may be able to access increasingly more data in the future. The UK is rolling out a new crypto-asset reporting framework. Relevant service providers will need to collect user and transaction information and report it as required. This means that the past situation—relying on “scattered transaction records and difficult-to-trace information”—may be gradually changing.
😨 So the real reason the market should care about these more than 80,000 warning letters isn’t just the number itself. It reflects a shift in global regulatory trends. As crypto assets increasingly enter mainstream financial systems, taxation, identity verification, transaction records, and cross-border data sharing may all become key parts of future regulation. For ordinary users, the most important thing may not be to start organizing information only after receiving a notice, but to save transaction records in advance and understand the relevant rules in your location. Especially for users who frequently exchange between different assets, it’s easier to overlook certain transactions that may need to be reported.
