Micron Technology (MU) announced on August 20 the establishment of "Micron Research Labs"—the United States’ first long-term research institution dedicated to storage technologies. Headquartered in Boise, Idaho, it plans to invest $10 billion over the next decade, focusing on advanced storage, computing architecture, and packaging. This investment is independent of its commitments to manufacturing and R&D in the U.S. totaling more than $250 billion. Construction of the campus is expected to begin in 2027. Against the backdrop of rising HBM demand driven by AI compute capacity, ramping up domestic R&D is seen as a move to further solidify its position as a leading AI memory supplier. After the news broke, MU rose by about 4% on the day; subsequent performance will still depend on the pace of AI spending and the industry cycle. $MU
