A later result isn’t always the result that should win.
Imagine two trains leave the same station using different routes. One leaves earlier, but the other arrives first.
Do you automatically decide the later arrival should replace the earlier one?
That’s what made @Dusk ’s fork-resolution design interesting to me.
Succinct Attestation works through iterations. When an iteration doesn’t reach the required quorum, consensus can continue to the next one. If iteration 2 and iteration 5 both produce candidates that reach quorum, Dusk gives priority to the lower iteration—the earlier position in the consensus process.
This is where rolling finality becomes important. A later quorum doesn’t automatically make the latest candidate decisive; earlier iterations still matter when determining which candidate gets priority.
And there’s a second-order question I find interesting: if later iterations don’t automatically override earlier unresolved ones, could validators have an incentive to help resolve earlier iterations rather than simply wait for the newest candidate?
For financial settlement, that distinction matters: it’s not enough to reach agreement—you need a deterministic rule for which agreement becomes final.
That’s the part of Dusk’s consensus design I want to keep watching.
