The U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission has issued a request for comments on the listing of compute derivatives contracts and related market oversight issues to better understand and refine regulation of the compute derivatives market. According to ChainCatcher, CFTC Chair Michael S. Selig said a strong compute derivatives market is necessary for the United States to win the AI race.

Selig said the U.S. market once established trading standards for commodities that supported the industrial economy, and that similar rules will be needed for compute commodities in the emerging intelligent economy. He said the request for comments is the first step toward establishing clear rules for the U.S. compute market.

The consultation covers the size of the compute spot market, liquidity, and other market characteristics, as well as market supervision, manipulation risks, customer protection, and compute perpetual futures. Market participants are also invited to comment on other aspects of the compute market. The comment period will remain open for 60 days after the notice is published in the Federal Register.
