BTC Breaks Above 66,000; ETH Surges Past 2,000: In 24 Hours, the Entire Network Liquidates $600 Million—After the Short-Squeeze “Wall” Gets Swept Away, the FOMC Minutes Appear

In the late hours of August 19, before the FOMC minutes were released, the market took action first. Around 23:05 Beijing time, ETH/USDT broke through the $2,000 whole-dollar mark, trading at $2,000.98 and up 4.48% over the past 24 hours (Gate market data; ChainCatcher’s 8/19 23:05 snapshot). Around 23:10, BTC rose and broke above $66,000; ETH was at $2,011, with the gains expanding to 5.3% (wublock123’s 8/19 23:10 snapshot). A later snapshot showed BTC briefly reaching $68,197, up 5.23%, while ETH reached $2,068, up 7.95% (Cointelegraph Chinese snapshot; time later than the snapshots above). Shorts became the main fuel for this rally.

I. Market timeline: it only took 4 hours for ETH to move from 1,917 to 2,000

On 8/19 daytime, ETH was still consolidating around $1,900: on 8/18, the trading range was $1,886.47–$1,913.87 (Investing.com 8/18 기준). At 19:23 on 8/19, it was reported at $1,917.99, up 1.1% (CoinGlass data, ChainCatcher 8/19 19:23 기준). Around 20:00, it rose by about 3% to roughly $1,920. At that time, the analysis said that below $2,000 there was a liquidation cluster, and that breaking through resistance would be relatively difficult (8/19 20:00 기준 by Bijiangwang). At 22:53, ETH was reported at $1,950.47, up 2.01% (Gate market, ChainCatcher 8/19 22:53 기준); at 23:05 it broke above $2,000; at 23:10 it reached $2,011. In the four hours, ETH moved from $1,917 to $2,011, an increase of about 4.9% (calculation 기준).

BTC also strengthened in sync: on 8/19 daytime, amid a backdrop of U.S. stocks falling, it held above $64,000. CoinGecko quoted around $64,856 (Myfxbook/CoinGecko 8/19 기준). It then broke above the $66,000 psychological level; after the 23:10 snapshot, it continued to move upward. Broad altcoins surged across the board: XRP rose 5.92% to $1.06, BNB rose 2.36% to $617.98, SOL and others moved higher as well (Cointelegraph snapshot 기준; exact timestamps are in the notes at the end).

XRP’s rise also has an event backdrop: Ripple executives attended a White House technology leaders event, and the regulatory narrative and the price warmed up together (Gate News 8/14, TokenPost 8/19 기준 with added analysis). This kind of “list-narrative-price” linkage is common on event days. Whether the upside before the meeting conclusions land is sustainable needs confirmation via further news (analysis 기준).

II. Liquidation data: shorts are the main fuel

Coinglass data shows that as of late night on 8/19, in the past 24 hours total liquidations across the whole market were about $603 million. Of that, short liquidations were $491 million and long liquidations were $112 million (Odaily late night on 8/19 paraphrase 기준). In a shorter window it got more intense: in the past 1 hour, total liquidations were about $466 million, with ETH at $209 million and BTC at $207 million; short liquidations were $438 million, absolutely dominating (Cointelegraph Chinese late night on 8/19 기준). Another breakdown for 24 hours: BTC contract short liquidations were about $662 million, while ETH shorts were about $366 million (CryptoCity 8/19 기준).

III. The three groups of numbers have different statistical windows, so direct comparison can lead to misreading: $603 million is the 24-hour total, $466 million is the single-hour figure, and $662 million is the BTC-only 24-hour breakdown. Short liquidations make up roughly 81% of the 24-hour liquidations (4.91/6.03, calculation 기준), all pointing to the same fact: this upswing was driven by short liquidations, while directional buying was more of a follower (analysis 기준).

III. The liquidation wall got swept away, and the map was redrawn

Coinglass’s framework yesterday was: if ETH breaks above $1,997, it would trigger about $604 million in short liquidations; if it falls below $1,821, it would trigger about $735 million in long liquidations (ChainCatcher 8/19 02:00 기준). The breakout late at night on 8/19 swept straight through the $1,997–$2,000 range, and short liquidation force became the accelerator. After the market update, Coinglass’s new map moved up: when ETH fell below $1,822, the liquidation strength for longs was about $923 million; when it broke above $2,005, the liquidation strength for shorts was about $841 million (ChainCatcher 8/19 paraphrase of Coinglass 기준).

The liquidation wall moved from $1,997/$604 million to $2,005/$841 million, showing that after the breakout the shorts didn’t exit—they regrouped at higher levels. The liquidation strength for longs tied to $1,822 also rose from $735 million to $923 million; both sides got heavier (comparative calculation 기준).

IV. Event window: meeting minutes, the White House, and testnets

The market move kicked off the night before the FOMC meeting minutes were released. At 2:00 a.m. Beijing time on 8/20, the Federal Reserve released the July meeting minutes. In the July meeting, the policy rate was maintained at 3.50%–3.75% with a 9:3 split; the three dissenting votes against the rate hikes were the first such votes since September 2016. The wording in the minutes would directly revise the market’s pricing of rate-hike expectations (baiyi 8/17 기준). In the same time window, a White House technology leaders event took place: latest reports say Trump met with SEC Chair Atkins, CFTC Chair Selig, and representatives from Coinbase, Ripple, a16z, Nasdaq, etc., setting the stage for the CFTC Innovation Advisory Committee’s first meeting on 8/20 (TokenPost/ChainCatcher 8/19 reporting 기준); prediction market firms were not invited (PANews 8/19 기준). Additionally, Ethereum’s Glamsterdam upgrade testnet Platåberget fork is scheduled for 8/20, including EIP-7732 and a Gas target of 200 million; the mainnet timeline is in Q4 2026 (Edgen/bingx/TokenPost 8/17 기준). In other words, there are three things landing for crypto today at the same time.

There’s another supply-side event tonight: ZRO will unlock about 25.71 million tokens at 19:00 Beijing time on 8/20 (about 4.40% of circulating supply, around $19.90 million). KAITO will unlock about 32.60 million tokens at 20:00 (about 7.63% of circulating supply, around $11.48 million; Tokenomist total supply figure of 29.40 million tokens is also noted) (Foresight/panews 8/15-16, edaface 8/18 기준). Unlocks and the mainstream market action happen on the same day—supply shocks will stack with the liquidation-driven move.

BTC’s funding rate rose first and then fell during the run: CryptoQuant data shows the rate dropped from a recent peak of 0.022807 to 0.006425 (CryptoQuant 8/19 기준). Crowded long positions have loosened, but a still-positive funding rate indicates leverage positioning remains net-long.

V. Risk and source/notation notes

1. The price snapshot times differ a lot: ETH was reported at $1,917.99 at 19:23, $1,950.47 at 22:53, $2,000.98 at 23:05, and $2,011 at 23:10; later snapshot was $2,068.29. For BTC, it broke above $66,000 at 23:10, and the later snapshot was $68,197.58. Please rely on Binance’s real-time prices;

2. Liquidation data uses multiple sources side by side: 24-hour $603 million (Odaily), 1-hour $466 million (Cointelegraph), BTC 24-hour $662 million / ETH 3.66e8 (CryptoCity). The statistical windows differ;

3. Liquidation “intensity” refers to Coinglass’s point-in-time snapshot, while the market conditions keep changing during the move;

4. The White House meeting is based on media’s timestamped reporting format; the specific agenda and conclusions should follow official releases. The FOMC minutes script was not yet published at the time of writing;

5. The time of writing is 8/20 00:06 Beijing time, about 2 hours before the FOMC minutes are released; the market may change violently around the release;

Summary

ETH swept from $1,917 to $2,011 in four hours, BTC broke above $66,000, short liquidations totaled $490 million, and the liquidation wall moved up from $1,997 to $2,005. The move is real, but the driver was liquidation—not new incremental buying. This, coming the night before the minutes, implies volatility will be amplified in both directions. The 2:00 a.m. minutes are the next command: holding above $2,005 or pulling back to test $1,997—will be decided tonight. After the breakout, will you chase longs, or wait for the minutes to land?
