Did you know that more than $574 million in crypto has been lost to address mistakes on Ethereum and BNB Chain? A new academic study identified 65,340 high-risk address misuse cases, from testnet addresses used on mainnet to exposed private keys. Contract account misuse made up 49,344 cases, involving 22,738 ETH and 8,681 BNB. Another 15,996 cases came from externally owned accounts with leaked private keys, costing 104,224 ETH and 9,045 BNB. Attackers also exploit these errors: in 469 cases they deployed malicious contracts where users had trapped funds, and in 17,270 cases they used EIP-7702 to redirect incoming money.
