A Dogecoin reference puts Bitcoin users on alert over a serious security threat
BitBox published yesterday a security update for its BitBox02 wallets. Called Dixence, the fix addresses several vulnerabilities, including two considered severe. The following day, the Dogecoin contributor Mishaboar shared the alert and urged affected bitcoin holders to verify their firmware without waiting.
BitBox identifies two severe vulnerabilities as well as a problem that affects silent payments.
The bootloader flaw had already been corrected with Oeschinen 9.26.2. Firmware 9.26.5, delivered with Dixence, resolves the other reported issues.
No cases of exploitation have been identified to date. BitBox recommends updating only via its official application.
BitBox02, multiple firmware versions are involved
BitBox02 is a hardware wallet that stores private keys on a separate device from the phone or computer. The product description page for the BitBox02 already tested by Cointribune helps position the product, but the August 17 challenge is now software: BitBox recommends the latest version of its firmware.
The first flaw affects the bootloader, the program responsible for starting the firmware when the device boots. According to the security bulletin published by BitBox, under certain conditions an attacker could induce a user to install malicious firmware through a fake BitBox application. Once the device was unlocked, the funds could be at risk.
