I noticed something odd while reading through Dusk's staking guide: topping up a stake that's already active doesn't fully activate. Only 90% of the added amount joins active stake right away the remaining 10% gets recorded as locked stake instead.
What caught my attention is that this only applies once your original stake is already active. If you top up while the original position is still in its maturity window, the whole addition just follows the normal activation schedule and there's no split at all. The 90/10 rule is specifically for Adding to a position that's already earning.
The mechanism itself is simple. Say you add 4,000 DUSK to a stake that's already active. 3,600 DUSK becomes active immediately, and 400 DUSK sits as locked stake still Owned by you still yours but not participating in consensus and not earning. According to the docs recovering that locked portion may require fully unstaking the entire position rather than just withdrawing the 10%.
Why would a protocol build in a partial activation penalty specifically for top-ups? My read is that it discourages provisioners from constantly resizing their stake to game selection probability in the moment since a chunk of every addition gets parked instead of put to work instantly.
What's unclear to me from the documentation is whether that locked 10% compounds if you keep topping up repeatedly or whether there's any path to reclaim it besides a full unstake. That's the part I'd want verified directly from a node operator who's actually done a top-up on mainnet.
Has anyone here topped up an active stake and confirmed how the locked portion behaved for them?
