Ethereum Launches Glamsterdam Public Testnet: Even “ETH Transfers Fixed at 21000 Gas” Is Being Changed?
The Ethereum Foundation has just launched the Platåberget public testnet, specifically to let the community test the Glamsterdam upgrade early; Glamsterdam will be activated on this testnet on August 20. After it stabilizes, it will then move on to Sepolia, Hoodie, and finally to the mainnet.
In other words:
This isn’t about swapping coins for ordinary users—it’s about, before the upgrade goes live on the mainnet, letting wallets, nodes, validators, and developers step through any parts that might go wrong.
This change is significant: ePBS will be refactored to the block production process, BAL will pave the way for parallel processing, the maximum contract size will increase from 24KiB to 64KiB, and a large number of Gas prices will be recalibrated.
Even the long-held saying that “a typical ETH transfer costs 21000 Gas” will no longer be entirely true afterward: transfers to an existing account will still be 21000, but creating a new account will additionally incur state Gas.
The real goal of Glamsterdam is clear:
It’s not just about being a bit cheaper—it’s about laying the groundwork for Ethereum L1’s higher throughput in the future and an ~200M Gas-capacity tier.
