Canada and the US are racing to reach a deal before new 50% tariffs on about $20bn (C$28bn) of Canadian imports take effect on Wednesday, according to BBC. Canadian negotiators have been in Washington for a week, while Prime Minister Mark Carney said the talks are “very delicate and intense” and that he would not sign any agreement unless it is good for Canada.
US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and Canadian officials have not yet reached a final agreement. The US is seeking concessions including the removal of Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on American autos, changes to dairy quotas and an end to provincial bans on US alcohol sales. Carney said he plans to speak with Donald Trump before the deadline and has “plans for any situation that may arise” if the talks fail.
