On August 18, the three major U.S. stock indexes fell collectively overnight on Monday. The Nasdaq dropped 0.32%, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.51%, and the S&P 500 closed down 0.52%. There was a clear divergence in market structure: storage and optical-communication AI hardware sectors strengthened against the trend. In the storage sector, Kioxia’s ADR surged by more than 13%, SanDisk (SNDK.US) rose by more than 8%, Western Digital (WDC.US) rose by more than 5%, and Micron Technology (MU.US) climbed by more than 4%. In the optical-communication sector, Coherent (COHR.US) jumped by more than 7%, while Corning and Lumentum both rose by more than 4%.
On the news layer, geopolitical risks, fluctuations in U.S. Treasury yields, and major AI-sector developments are intertwined. On the geopolitical front, Trump refused to extend the temporary U.S.-Iran ceasefire agreement, reiterating his idea of declaring the Strait of Hormuz as U.S. territory. Reports say he is in no rush to end the war and threatened that if Oman interferes with the United States, the latter would bomb it. In the bond market, the selling wave continues to pressure long-term U.S. Treasuries, with the 30-year yield rising to nearly a two-decade high.
Several major updates are coming from the AI industry. Nvidia (NVDA.US) released an announcement. OpenAI will build and operate a world-class AI factory at the PORTS?Pike campus, with the project fully adopting Nvidia’s DSX end-to-end AI factory platform covering GPUs, CPUs, networking, and infrastructure software. Nvidia plans to invest up to $105 billion to support the development of a large data-center campus in Ohio, with subsequent leasing by OpenAI. Separately, reports indicate that Anthropic’s annualized revenue could exceed $65 billion, more than 6x the growth from the end of last year.
Key points in other overseas markets: U.S.-Canada trade negotiations have hit a stalemate, with automobile tariffs becoming the core point of disagreement. Canada wants to cut auto tariffs to 10%, while the U.S. insists on keeping the minimum tax rate at 15%. In Europe, researchers at the European Central Bank warned that after a rapid run-up in tech stocks, the stock market may face a correction risk, which could in turn impact the euro area economy. Additionally, super-wealthy family offices from the Americas, Europe, and the Middle East have continued to build positions in SpaceX (SPCX.US), with their combined holdings already exceeding $3.8 billion.
