Most builders reach for Solidity and the EVM out of muscle memory — the tools, the libraries, the years of habit all live there. But the EVM has one trait that makes it nearly useless for regulated finance: it shows everything. Contract state is public by default. Every balance, every counterparty, readable by anyone.
For a DEX, fine. For a tokenized bond with a confidential cap table and sensitive positions, that transparency is a non-starter. So teams hit an ugly fork. Abandon the EVM entirely and lose the whole toolchain and talent pool. Or bolt privacy on off-chain — and quietly re-add the trusted middleman you came here to remove.
DuskEVM is Dusk's attempt to dodge that fork: keep the familiar Solidity path, but add confidentiality natively through Hedger, its privacy module. The mechanism is the interesting bit — homomorphic encryption plus zero-knowledge proofs, so a contract can compute over data it never exposes and still prove it ran correctly. Reviewable, not just hidden.
I stay skeptical. FHE has historically been slow and costly, and ZK proving isn't free. "Confidential EVM" has been promised before and buckled under real load. Reviewable privacy only matters if it's fast enough to build on.
Who'd use it? Teams that want EVM familiarity but legally can't leak. Why it might work: it meets developers where they already are. What kills it: overhead that makes real apps impractical.
Worth watching. The bottleneck is performance, not the idea.
