On August 16, Intersect, Cardano’s governance body, officially released the roadmap for the Dijkstra hard fork. The upgrade will be implemented in two phases, aiming to comprehensively improve network throughput and transaction finality through the linear Leios expansion solution and the Ouroboros Peras consensus protocol.
📅 Phase 1: Q4 2026
The first phase target is to launch the mainnet in the fourth quarter of 2026, with the core focus on activating Ouroboros Linear Leios (CIP-164).
· Core expansion: Introduce an “endorser blocks” mechanism, where the staking pool committee certifies additional transactions. This plan aims to significantly increase throughput while preserving the existing security model of Ouroboros Praos.
· Technical optimizations: Introduce nested transactions, enhanced account addresses, and improvements such as removing the isValid field, among other changes.
· Smart contracts: Includes changes to Plutus V4.
· Node client: The Amaru node client, planned to be developed in Rust, is scheduled to launch on the mainnet in November 2026 to diversify node client implementations.
📅 Phase 2: Q2 2027
The goal for Phase 2 is to activate the Ouroboros Peras consensus protocol via a single separate hard fork in Q2 2027.
· Accelerated finality: Achieve faster transaction settlement through a voting mechanism operated by staking pool operators, reducing transaction confirmation time.
📌 Timeline and governance
Intersect emphasizes that the timelines above are estimates, not commitments. Governance and community testing may lead to delays in activation. In addition, Cardano plans to submit amendments by September 11 to add Dijkstra-related parameters.
💡 What do you think?
Dijkstra is another key upgrade after the Chang hard fork (introducing on-chain governance) in Cardano. If everything goes smoothly, Leios in Q4 2026 will bring a significant increase in throughput, and Peras in Q2 2027 will greatly improve the user experience. Whether this upgrade goes smoothly will be crucial for Cardano to maintain competitiveness in the fiercely competitive public-chain arena.
