⛩️ JAPAN RETURNS TO YASUKUNI 🌸

Historical and diplomatic frictions resurface in East Asia following the Japanese political establishment’s moves in a new commemoration of the end of World War II. Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi attended in person the controversial Yasukuni shrine, while Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi chose to send a ritual offering from afar.

📜 THE SHADOW OF THE WARS’ PAST

Yasukuni Shrine is regarded by neighboring countries as a symbol of the militarism of Japan’s imperial past. In its facilities, tribute is paid to more than 2.5 million war dead, including 14 political and military leaders condemned as Class A war criminals after the world conflict.

🌏 IMMEDIATE REACTION FROM BEIJING AND SEOUL

Diplomatic responses were not slow in coming. China and South Korea issued strong formal protests condemning the visits and ritual offerings, pointing out that these actions show a lack of genuine remorse for the abuses committed during the colonial occupation and the invasion of the 20th century.
