That year, an old hunter led a few young men along the edge of the mountains, patrolling the border of the highlands. The valley beneath their feet had once been a lush, thriving primeval forest—but now, due to overdevelopment, it looked somewhat scarred.
Suddenly, a fledgling hawk tumbled from above the broken nest on the Cliff. It flapped its wings, not yet fully grown, and fell heavily into a pile of deadwood. The young men rushed in, arguing about whether to take it home to care for it painstakingly, or to preserve it as an expensive specimen for display.
The old hunter crouched down and gently smoothed the frightened feathers of the fledgling. With a calm tone, he said, “Do you think protecting an eagle is because we’re more noble than others, and we understand nature better? No. We’re not that extraordinary.”
He reached out and pointed to the sky, where an adult eagle circled between the clouds, letting out a sharp, piercing cry.
“An eagle is not a pet. It belongs to this sky. When we choose to clench our fist and open our wings to protect it, this isn’t a show of lofty virtue—it’s a vow. A vow that we’re still willing to believe this land deserves to be restored, and that this sky still needs the power to rule itself.”
