#bstockscis 22 hours a day — that’s the limit NYSE is only just preparing for in 2026. 😅
I dug into how long the traditional exchange took to move even a bit closer to “always open” — and the numbers surprised me.
For decades, trading on the NYSE ran exactly from 9:30 to 16:00, six and a half hours, and that was it. Only in the late 1990s did the first electronic venues (ECNs) appear, enabling trading after the close — first for institutions only, from 16:00 to 18:00. Retail investors got access later, along with the rise of online brokers.
Nowadays, the widest window some brokers offer is roughly from 4 a.m. to 8 p.m. in New York time — about 16 hours a day. And the NYSE only recently officially announced plans to extend trading on its Arca platform to 22 hours — and it’s being framed as major news for the entire industry.
So the oldest and largest exchange in the world, after almost 100 years of existence, is only approaching near-24/7 — and not even on weekends. bStocks has already crossed that mark — 24/7, with no pilot programs and no “we’ll launch soon.”
Didn’t think “always open” would be such a new goal even for Wall Street. And did you think the NYSE has been trading 24/7 for a long time? 🤔
