According to Yonhap, outstanding short selling in South Korea climbed to about 19 trillion won ($13.4 billion) as of Tuesday, up 14% from 16.73 trillion won at the end of last month, even as the stock market rebounded sharply from a rout tied to chipmakers and artificial intelligence-related shares. Data from the Korea Exchange showed short selling had stood at 15 trillion won at the end of February, fell to 12 trillion won in early March and then rose to 23 trillion won in early June. So far this month, the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) has gained 6%, while the tech-heavy KOSDAQ index has jumped 20%. Investors remain concerned about the pace of the recent rally and are still unsure whether the chipmaking sector has already peaked.
