The "AI boom" and global megatrends

Copper conducts electricity extremely well and is the physical foundation of almost all future technologies:

Artificial intelligence & data centers: The enormous expansion of AI data centers consumes huge amounts of copper. Gigantic quantities of power must be transported and servers massively wired. A single large data center requires an estimated 40,000 to 50,000 tonnes of copper.

Energy transition & power grids: Expanding wind and solar power plants and modernizing power grids worldwide require vast quantities of the metal.

E-mobility: An electric car needs three to four times as much copper as a conventional combustion engine vehicle.

2. Strikes, tariffs, and sluggish mines (supply)

While demand is rising rapidly, production cannot simply be scaled up:

Closures & declining ore grades: In the world’s most important mining countries (such as Chile, Peru, or the Congo), there are repeatedly strikes, political conflicts, and problems with water supply. In addition, the purity level of copper in existing mines declines, making extraction more expensive and more complex.

Long lead times: It often takes 10 to 15 years to develop a new copper mine from discovery to production. A short-term shortage cannot be made up for quickly from a geological perspective.

Trade policy and tariffs: US tariff policy (e.g., duties on processed copper products) has disrupted supply chains and contributed to a massive buildup of inventories as well as price markups.
