đ¨Latest Hong Kong Police data: In the first half of this year, Hong Kong recorded a total of 20,613 fraud cases, with total losses of approximately HK$3.5 billion. Of these, 2,151 cases involved investment scams, with losses as high as HK$1.66 billionâan astonishing proportion.
Of particular note is an investment scam case involving cryptocurrencies, with a single-transaction loss of about HK$84 million. The scammers lured victims into transferring crypto assets to electronic wallets under their control. By the time the victims realized they could not withdraw funds, the wallets were already empty.
In addition, the JPEX virtual asset platform case that has shaken Hong Kong is still under investigation. It has so far involved around 2,800 victims, with losses of about HK$1.6 billion. Since 2023, the police have arrested 81 people. Among them, 29 have been charged with conspiracy to commit fraud, money laundering, and perverting the course of justice, among other offenses.
â ď¸A reminder to all friends in the crypto community:
⢠Any project that asks you to transfer your assets to a âstrange/unknown walletâ â stop immediately
⢠âInvestment groupsâ that promise high returns and that you canât lose are most likely scams
⢠Information on licensed, legitimate platforms can be found on the website of the Hong Kong Securities and Futures Commission
⢠If you spot anything suspicious, report to the police as soon as possible and preserve the transfer records
The crypto world is crowded with both legitimate players and fraudsters, and scammersâ tactics keep escalatingâbut the core playbook hasnât changed: they exploit your FOMO (fear of missing out). Protect your walletâit's more important than chasing any â100x coin.â
