SK Hynix makes its move: the AI era is rewriting the rules of the memory industry, and future demand could surge
AI is changing the game rules across the entire memory industry.
SK Hynix chairman Choi Tae-won said that in the past, demand in the memory industry was mainly driven by growth in the number of people. The number of devices such as smartphones and computers determined the market size, and one person typically only needed one phone and one computer.
But in the AI era, the logic is completely different. In the future, each person may own multiple AI agents at the same time, and behind every AI agent there will be a need for a large amount of memory to run.
This means that memory demand may no longer be just a matter of steady growth, but could instead see an order-of-magnitude increase.
Choi believes that although the memory industry cycle still exists, this round of AI-driven boom may last longer, because new structural demand has already emerged underneath it.
At least for now, customers’ demand for high-performance memory products remains very strong. AI is becoming an important force driving the semiconductor industry into a new cycle.
