You will lose your rights to offshore exploration off a
South Africa coast
Shell Plc will not be allowed to renew its prospecting right off the Wild Coast in South Africa, following its loss of a legal battle that began in 2021. The Constitutional Court issued its ruling on Friday, cancelling the aforementioned exploration right.
The case began when activists opposed a seismic survey that Shell and a local partner were planning in an area where whales are observed repeatedly. Environmental groups were able to obtain a court order to halt exploration activity, citing concerns about insufficient consultation with local communities, as well as the potential impact of the survey on local residents and marine life.
Melissa Grovening Groves, a lawyer and program director at the "Natural Justice" organization, which was a party to the case, said: "What the Constitutional Court decided was to cancel the prospecting right."
