What’s even more unexpected is that scammers also trick each other.
First, they pretend to buy coins and steal the dirty-cash merchant’s digital assets.
Some people specifically use dirty money to buy someone else’s USDT (a type of digital currency). They get the seller’s bank account frozen. But there are even more capable people who pretend to be regular buyers and go find these dirty-money merchants to buy coins. Once the dirty-money merchant transfers the digital currency, this fake buyer won’t pay and just disappears. Since the dirty-money merchant’s own money is also not clean, they don’t dare to report it to the police, and they can only suffer a loss of coins for nothing.
Second, a hacker steals a huge sum—but everyone teams up to deal with them.
A hacker stole a massive amount of money from a platform called Poly Network, worth more than $600 million. The hacker was smug and even left comments mocking others. But all exchanges acted together, blocked the address where the hacker was receiving money, and even the USDT the hacker stole was frozen so it couldn’t be spent. In the end, the hacker had no choice but to return all the money—and even said they were actually a “good person,” claiming they were helping test security.
Third, an exchange trying to run away after scamming—yet their own people fight first.
Some small exchanges were basically set up to scam money in the first place. They planned to abscond with all users’ funds and then flee. They would tell users the website was attacked by hackers. But during the money-splitting process, their internal people started arguing over who got more and who got less. Someone felt it was unfair, got angry, and reported it to the police—resulting in the entire team being arrested, and all the money being confiscated.
