The Ethereum Foundation has officially abandoned the Poseidon hash algorithm and is shifting toward SHA2 or BLAKE2 to advance a post-quantum cryptography roadmap.

Researcher Justin Drake revealed that this decision was driven by a major breakthrough in SNARK design. With optimizations for "binary field" operations, the performance of traditional hash functions in SNARK circuits can now rival Poseidon—one standard laptop can complete roughly 1 million verifications per second.

Since 2019, Poseidon has been widely used as a SNARK-friendly hashing scheme, providing long-term security for applications such as zkRollup and zkVM. Over eight years, the Ethereum Foundation has invested tens of millions of dollars in research and development for this effort.

The new roadmap shows that production-grade leanVM is expected to be released in 2027, while related deployments across the consensus layer, data layer, and execution layer are expected to be completed in 2028. The post-quantum team is accelerating research on binary field–related topics, paving the way for Ethereum’s next phase of security upgrades.
