ZeroDev founder Derek Chiang announced that he will be joining Ethlabs, working with developers to bring Ethereum technology into real-world products and business.

Looking back, Offchain Labs (the parent company of Arbitrum) acquired the smart account development team ZeroDev in August 2025. This personnel change can be seen as further integration following the acquisition. ZeroDev has long focused on the ERC-4337 smart account and Account Abstraction fields. Its technology stack is highly complementary with the Arbitrum ecosystem under Offchain Labs. Meanwhile, Ethlabs—an engineering team focused on Ethereum protocol development—is well positioned to carry forward the engineering output of the underlying technology.

Two points worth noting:
First, the smart account experience on the Arbitrum chain is expected to be further upgraded. Product forms such as wallet abstraction, gas fee sponsorship, and session keys may be rolled out faster.
Second, development resources in the account abstraction track are increasingly concentrating among leading players, potentially further shrinking the independent survival space for smaller, scattered teams.

In the short term, this is favorable especially for the $ETH ecosystem and the L2 experience. In the long term, it will depend on whether Ethlabs and Offchain Labs can form a sustained technical output closed loop.
