In another 50 or 100 years, AI should be able to become non-human intelligence that can conduct large-scale searches over the space of life design.
Maybe in another decade or so, we’ll see cloned entities suddenly take off; and in another 40 or 50 years, perhaps we’ll see AI redesign living organisms.
Gene editing should develop rapidly. Perhaps in the future society will be one where humans and machines are integrated.
Personally, I think the world has already fully entered Kurzweil’s “law of accelerating returns,” and no one can predict what kind of technological breakthroughs will happen tomorrow.
You can look back four years: no one would dare imagine that AI could help solve ten problems at the level of Fields Medal and Turing Award—and even more terrifying is that humanity has evolved over billions of years. Measured on the timescale of human evolution, AI is still at the “bacterial stage.” Give it another one billion years to evolve, and it may well spread across the Milky Way—or have already gone to other galaxies.
