Grab a coffee and get comfortable—Binance is quietly acting in a part of Europe that could reshape the way crypto operates across the continent.
Today's crypto news: Binance's Greek strategy arrives late but with big ambitions
Fortune has reported that Binance has formally applied for the EU's pan-European MiCA license through its new Greek subsidiary, Binary Greece.
This move positions Binance for full compliance with the Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulatory framework ahead of the crucial deadline of July 1, 2026, after which unlicensed platforms risk restrictions or exclusion from serving EU and EEA users.
“Providers of crypto-asset services that have offered services in compliance with the regulations in force before December 30, 2024, may continue to do so until July 1, 2026, or until they receive an authorization or a rejection as per Article 63, depending on which event occurs first,” said the European Securities and Markets Authority.
The decision to apply in Greece, rather than the usual crypto-friendly hubs like Malta or Luxembourg, represents a surprising strategic move.
With a share capital of €25,000 (almost $30,000) and the structure of a single-shareholder joint-stock company, Binary Greece signals Binance's long-term commitment to building a European presence.
Greek authorities, while not historically the quickest in issuing licenses, offer a potentially streamlined approval process and a less saturated regulatory environment. This makes Greece an emerging hub for crypto activities.
MiCA, in effect from 2023, provides a unified regulatory framework across all 27 EU member states and EEA countries. We are talking about around 450 million potential users.
By obtaining a license from any member state, exchanges can offer their services across the continent. This eliminates the need for fragmented national registrations and reduces compliance costs.
For Binance, MiCA approval would unlock pan-European operations, including trading, custody, and regulated stablecoin offerings. At the same time, it would address the concerns raised in countries like France.
Chasing in a crowded market, Binance's race for MiCA compliance
Several other major exchanges have already obtained a MiCA or equivalent CASP license, including:
Kraken through Ireland
Coinbase through Luxembourg
Bybit EU through Austria
OKX in Malta
Crypto.com, Bitpanda, and Gemini.
These licenses allow seamless operation across the EU and put holders in a competitive position in a regulated context.
Binance's late entry, however, leverages the company's scale and operational expertise to bridge the gap. Thus, it could regain market share in Europe, where previous restrictions had limited its spread.
The Greek subsidiary has been established indefinitely, a sign of a long-term strategic presence and not a temporary solution.
The July 2026 deadline increases pressure on Binance and other global operators. Full MiCA compliance will be mandatory to offer services such as:
issuance of stablecoins
trading on exchanges, and
custody across the EU block.
In particular, some EU countries (France, Italy, and Austria) have expressed concerns about the passporting mechanism provided by MiCA.
They suggested greater centralization under the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA). However, changing the regulatory framework at this point would be destabilizing.
The potential approval of Binance would not make it the only standout in terms of licenses, as it would join a competitive landscape of exchanges already compliant with MiCA.
However, the move would eliminate significant regulatory uncertainty, increase credibility, and allow for more cost-efficient pan-European expansion.
With Binary Greece, Binance secures a strategic position in both the EU market and the emerging Greek crypto ecosystem.
