According to Yonhap, South Korea's government unveiled key projects under its SEED initiative to develop advanced technologies in seven sectors, including renewable energy, space science and quantum computing, as part of efforts to find new growth engines. The plan covers commercialization of water-cooled small modular reactors by 2035, construction of non-water-cooled SMRs from around 2030, and the creation of a special purpose company with private-sector participation to manage advanced modular reactor development. It also calls for a locally developed nuclear fusion reactor by 2035, a 100-qubit quantum computer by 2029, stronger quantum chip manufacturing capabilities, a low-Earth-orbit satellite communications network by 2035, AI-based bio infrastructure by 2030, core brain-computer interface technologies and a commercial BCI product by 2035. The government said it will also work to build supply chains for critical minerals and equipment, lift the recycling rate of 10 key minerals to up to 20 percent by 2030, and invest 10 trillion won ($7.1 billion) over the next five years in research and development of key equipment.
