Among the words that beginners like me are most likely to get confused about when studying $ETH is: Gas. I explain it in plain language: if you want the network to help you carry out an action, you need to pay a network usage fee; when the network is busy, the fee may be higher.

**Practical meaning for beginners like me**
1)Before making a transfer/authorization/interaction, first check whether the estimated fee is acceptable.
2)If it’s a complicated on-chain action you don’t understand, pause first—don’t keep getting confused and click “confirm” at the same time.
3)A high fee doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve been “scammed”; it could also be due to congestion. But phishing authorization is a different kind of risk—treat them separately.

**Today’s homework**
Before your next operation, answer in your own words: what am I paying to have the network do? Have I set a fee limit?
