The City Council of Laguna, in Santa Catarina, decided on Monday (19) to introduce a new element in the city's schools. Now, within financial education classes, boys and girls will also be able to learn about cryptocurrency, if they wish.

This so-called Ordinary Law No. 2,675, signed on January 16, 2026, states that the subject is optional for students. And the text makes it clear: cryptocurrencies are included in the list of payment methods that will be studied.

This measure applies to boys and girls in the final years of elementary school, from 6th to 9th grade, whether in public or private schools in the municipality of Santa Catarina. The idea is to teach people to better manage money, understand how to take care of income, and spend with awareness.

The content of the law discusses various modern payment methods:

- Cash

- Credit and debit card

- Pix

- Cryptocurrencies

Thus, students will learn about household and personal budgeting, which greatly helps in daily life.

This project was presented in 2025 by councilor Rhoomening Souza Rodrigues, known as Pingo, along with the support of Vitor Elibio Oliveira, both from the MDB.

According to Pingo, the proposal arose because nowadays consumption is high, credit is easy, and digital payments are everywhere. Therefore, it is necessary to prepare new generations to deal with money in a conscious, ethical, and responsible way. He argued that learning to plan, save, and invest is wisdom that is valuable for a lifetime.

For him, financial education is a tool for social emancipation: it helps to form independent citizens who understand the value of money, know how the household economy works, and perceive the consequences of financial choices. Teaching early about budgeting, credit, interest, saving, and investing is a way to avoid debts in the future and include more people in the economy.
