🐦 Signal wants to allow registration without a phone number

Signal is one of the most popular messengers, emphasizing privacy and end-to-end encryption. Right now, creating an account in it requires a phone number, but the developers are working to remove this requirement.

Buterin supported this idea.

This reduces reliance on mobile operators, protects against SIM card fraud, and makes it harder to block users by country.

However, for full anonymity, this is not enough. Even without a phone number, a person can eventually be identified by their IP address, the timing of message sending, contacts, and other metadata.

❗️ Therefore, in Buterin’s view, the next step is to hide not only the content of correspondence, but also the very fact of who communicates with whom.
