OpenAI is moving ahead with plans to open its next-generation model Astra to the public, but CEO Sam Altman said the company needs “a little more time” to ensure a safe deployment because of its strong cybersecurity capabilities, according to Jiemian News. Altman said OpenAI does not think restricting powerful models to a small group of users is the right strategy and wants Astra to be widely available eventually. He described Astra as a “powerful model” and said the company wants to offer it to more users as soon as safety can be assured.
