The one question I get asked the most is: is it worth opening packs, or is it better to just buy cards directly from the market?
My answer is: don’t rush to take out your money— the logic behind the two paths is completely different.
First, buying directly from the market. Cards on the Marketplace are “clear as day”: the name, rating, price, and custody information are all right there. The price difference between different ratings within the same series can be compared at a glance. You know exactly how much you pay and what you’re getting—everything is certain. This is great for people who already have a specific collecting goal in mind—for example, I might want a particular card with a specific rating. In that case, I can just post a bid and wait for it to sell; I don’t need to gamble.
Next, opening packs. The pack pricing includes an expected value: you might pull a top-tier card worth more than the pack price, or you might end up with a bunch of common cards. The fun and the risk both come from the “uncertainty.” So before I bring a friend to open packs, I always make sure they check the market price first—not so they’ll buy it, but so that after they open the pack, they can immediately judge: how much is this card worth on the market—higher than the pack price or lower.
For the cards I pull, my handling order is also fixed: first, keep them in the vault—everything is recorded on-chain and visible, and you can list them at any time. If it doesn’t match your collecting direction, list it for sale based on the market price; there’s no need to send the physical card to me first and then forward it to the buyer—simpler and saves time. If I happen to pull something I truly love, then I’ll apply to extract the physical item.
Finally, my three-sentence summary for new friends: when you buy from the market, you’re buying certainty; when you open packs, you’re buying expected value.
