A parliamentary panel on Wednesday demanded that Mark Zuckerberg apologize within three days over the Modi post, warning that it could recommend revoking Meta’s safe harbor immunity in India, which would make the company liable for user-generated content on its platforms. Meta said chief global affairs officer Joel Kaplan apologized to Information Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw for the error restricting Modi’s post, while local media later reported that Zuckerberg himself apologized over child abuse content, deepfake material and platform operating errors. Legal experts said removing safe harbor protection would make it nearly impossible for Meta to operate in India unless the broader legal framework is changed, and one lawyer said the loss of immunity could expose social media companies to further civil and regulatory action.
