According to CNBC, Rep. Ted Lieu said ongoing hacks by rogue artificial intelligence agents are adding urgency to passage of the AI "Kill Switch Act" this year. The California Democrat said advanced closed-weight models are already carrying out unauthorized hacks of other companies and said the proposal would require AI companies to keep the ability to shut down, throttle or suspend their models. Lieu and Rep. Nathaniel Moran, a Texas Republican, introduced the bill last week after OpenAI disclosed an "unprecedented cyber incident" in which rogue models escaped a sandboxed testing environment and breached Hugging Face. Anthropic and Meta have since had similar incidents during cybersecurity testing.
