Yesterday, while reading the EOTS signature implementation documentation in Babylon’s GitHub repository, I came across an explanation of the trigger conditions for “double-sign slashing,” and it’s worth discussing. Many people only think of BABY as a governance token, but in fact its role in protocol security runs far deeper than most realize.
EOTS (Extractable One-Time Signatures) is a key security primitive introduced by Babylon from the Bitcoin mainnet. Its logic is strict: if a Finality Provider signs two different block headers at the same height, its private key can be directly extracted. On the Bitcoin side, any light client can take this double-sign evidence to unlock the staked UTXO, enabling trustless slashing. But the logic on the BABY side is more complex—it relies on the BSN state machine to determine finality.
The key point is that BABY slashing is “synchronously triggered but asynchronously executed.” After the Sentinel reports the misconduct on the Bitcoin mainnet, the BABY side needs to wait for all nodes to complete the state transition before it executes the destruction of the co-staked portion. This time gap is usually anywhere from a few minutes to more than ten minutes, and under extreme network congestion it may be extended further. That means once the FP’s double-sign malicious behavior occurs, BABY’s reaction speed depends on the BSN’s finality confirmation efficiency.
Even more worth关注 is the slashing propagation path. After the Bitcoin side recovers the UTXO, the staker can retrieve the locked BTC principal, but the yield is wiped out. Meanwhile, the co-staked amount destroyed on the BABY side is permanently removed from circulation. This design effectively turns BABY into the protocol’s “security deposit.” The cost of an FP misbehaving is not only reputational damage on the Bitcoin side—it is also the permanent evaporation of the FP’s BABY holdings.
So, to assess whether an FP is reliable, you can’t just look at how long it stays online. You need to check whether the amount of BABY it self-stakes is high enough to keep it firmly on the honest side in the game between “benefits of wrongdoing” versus “costs of being slashed.” The higher the self-staked amount, the weaker the economic incentive to misbehave—because it backs honesty with real money.$BTC
