An FBI agent stole $1 million in cryptocurrency from counterintelligence materials and confessed himself
Patrick Yaroch, an FBI counterintelligence special agent, found seed phrases for wallets of a hostile state in internal systems and transferred the assets to himself. He did this 10–12 times, totaling about $1 million. According to him, he was unhappy that the FBI did not block these accounts and decided to “take matters into his own hands.”
He placed part of the funds on Kraken, and sent $1.02 million to the DeFi protocol Suilend via Slush—he admitted he did it simply because he liked the logo, which was shaped like a water droplet.
The investigation did not start with blockchain analysis: on July 28, Yaroch wrote to a former colleague at the Department of Justice himself, and the next day he personally came to the FBI headquarters to make a confession. Under a warrant, agents seized $925,426 in cryptocurrency from him.
