Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin indicated 2026 as the year when the blockchain will return to its “cypherpunk” roots.

On January 16, Buterin presented a technical roadmap aimed at reversing what he described as a decade of “regression” regarding decentralization.

How Ethereum intends to resolve its trade-offs

The co-founder of Ethereum admitted that the network's quest for mainstream scalability has compromised the fundamental promise of self-sovereignty.

According to him, the current ecosystem leaves users dangerously dependent on centralized infrastructures to interact with the ledger. This dependence revolves around trusted servers and Remote Procedure Calls, or RPC.

This architecture forces users to trust third-party data providers instead of verifying the chain independently.

To overcome this dependence, the roadmap for 2026 prioritizes the implementation of Helios and Zero-Knowledge Ethereum Virtual Machines (ZK-EVM).

These technologies aim to democratize the experience of a “full node,” allowing standard consumer hardware to verify incoming data through Bridge and Local Verification (BAL).

By shifting verification to the end user, Ethereum aims to eliminate the need for users to blindly rely on centralized gateways like Infura or Alchemy.

The roadmap also introduces aggressive privacy UX features that could put the network at odds with data-hungry analytics firms.

Thus, Buterin has proposed integrating Oblivious RAM (ORAM) and Private Information Retrieval (PIR). These cryptographic protocols allow wallets to request data from the network without revealing specific access patterns, effectively blinding RPC providers to user activities.

This choice is designed to prevent the “sale” of users' behavioral data to third parties.

From a security standpoint, the network will standardize wallets with social recovery and time lock. These tools aim to make fund recovery simple and intuitive, without relying on centralized custodians or cloud backups that could be “compromised by Google” or other tech giants.

Furthermore, Ethereum will strengthen user interfaces using decentralized storage protocols like IPFS. This reduces the risk that compromised front-ends can lock users out of their assets.

While warning that these improvements may not arrive with the upcoming imminent release, the plan for 2026 represents a fundamental reorganization of how the second largest blockchain in the world manages trust.

“It will be a long journey. We will not achieve everything we desire in the next Kohaku release, nor with the subsequent hard fork, nor with the one after that. But all this will make Ethereum an ecosystem that deserves not only its current place in the universe, but a much larger one,” he declared.
