Yesterday I looked at some data on the chain and found an address that seems pretty interesting. It belongs to an old miner who accumulated more than sixty BTC since 2019 and kept them in his original wallet without moving a thing. I DM’d him and asked why he didn’t take them out to do something. He replied with one line: “I don’t dare touch the DeFi stuff. Once you bridge across, it’s not my coin anymore.”
He’s telling the truth. These days there are many BTC derivatives on the market. Put simply, they require users to hand over the real Bitcoin and get a promissory note in return. If that promissory note goes bad, you can’t find the original coins anymore. In the 2022 wave, how many people went to zero directly because cross-chain bridges and custodians blew up. The old miner isn’t stupid—he just wants stability.
But recently this guy started asking about Babylon. Because he realized the logic is a bit different—@BabylonLabs_io isn’t the same game. You don’t need to bridge the BTC out, and you don’t need custody. You can stake on-chain using Bitcoin’s native time-locked script. The Bitcoin still stays in his own wallet, only temporarily locked. And during the lock period, it can provide security services for a PoS chain while also earning service fees.
He’s thinking even further ahead—if in the future he can take this staking credential and use it to borrow stablecoins from long-standing lending protocols like Aave, then the BTC he’s been holding finally starts paying him. Without selling the coins, he can still supplement cash flow—the money for upgrading and replacing mining rigs can come from that. $BTC
I looked into it. Right now in the Babylon ecosystem, BABY is an important part of incentives and governance, and the recent data has been climbing. Even though the second phase of the mainnet was only just launched, those older funds that were previously discouraged by “bridges” might end up becoming the real users of these native BTCFi approaches. After all, when it comes to safety, people who’ve been burned understand it best.
