I’ve noticed that in the Babylon ecosystem, an arbitrage window is starting to form between BTC stakers and BABY holders, but this window may narrow soon.
The logic is this: when BABY’s price on the secondary market is pushed down by market sentiment, the annualized return on BABY staked becomes passively higher, because the number of BABY rewards distributed is fixed, but the denominator (BABY price) shrinks. Then, if you buy BABY from the spot market with cheap U and stake it, the BABY-denominated yield converted back into U will be higher. Meanwhile, the returns on the BTC staker side become unstable because they change with the amount of BABY self-staked under FP. Some BTC stakers may start selling their BABY sentiment coins to convert into BTC for locking, which further suppresses the BABY price, forming a negative feedback loop.
But the opportunity here is: if one day Babylon governance passes a proposal to raise the minimum amount of FP self-staked BABY, those BTC stakers who positioned early can capture both the price upside and the staking yield.
I checked the Babylon governance forum and found a draft proposal currently being discussed to change the FP self-staking minimum threshold to 500 BABY. The current threshold is 50; if it increases tenfold, a lot of small FPs in the market will have to sweep the market to buy and accumulate BABY to meet the self-staking requirement. The buy-side order book would get thicker immediately.
My own approach is to take the position that was originally fully allocated to BTC staking, split off 15% of the BTC, convert it into BABY spot, and place it on a buy order near the lower end of the price range—essentially using my BTC exposure to “wait and see” for a governance-driven supply/demand shock in BABY. The essence of this arbitrage is betting that BABY’s governance weight will be repriced, and clearly the market isn’t pricing that in adequately right now.
