In crypto, the word "peer-reviewed" usually means nothing. In the case of Babylon, for the first time it means something, and I went to check how much.

The cryptography behind Trustless Bitcoin Vaults (TBV) from @BabylonLabs_io was built by David Tse — Shannon Prize laureate 2017, professor at Berkeley and Stanford. His algorithms are behind 3G and 4G communications, the math in your phone. The ZK layer under the TBV buyout is BABE: Babylon plus Berkeley — fresh, three orders of magnitude improvements in costs, open at IACR. Not an anonymous team with a nice website.

But there’s a detail that everyone who waves around that "peer-reviewed" word skips. The paper proves security within the boundaries of its assumptions, not the security of deployed code. Implementations, keys, incentives in the wild — the paper doesn’t audit that, and that’s exactly where crypto dies for years. BABE itself is new, it’s 2026: fresh cryptography is less tested, because there haven’t been years of attacks. Tse’s pedigree is a marker of seriousness, but not a guarantee of survival.

While it’s on testnet, not in production. $BABY here works inside the system as a coordination token — evaluate its role, not a torch.

The Shannon Prize does not audit smart contracts. A smart team and a safe prod are different things, and whoever confuses them pays first. Be honest: when was the last time you verified that the code does what the marketing promises? #baby
