I think many people haven’t figured out one thing: Babylon’s BTC staking is completely different from other projects. Other projects ask you to move BTC across a bridge, or wrap it into WBTC, or hand it over to a custodian to be locked away. Babylon doesn’t do it that way. It locks your BTC using Bitcoin’s own Taproot scripts. The coins stay on the Bitcoin network from start to finish—none of it ever leaves. Your BTC remains in your own address; it’s just locked by a script. The unlock conditions are written in the Bitcoin UTXO, and everyone on the network can verify them.
Bitcoin has no smart contracts and no EVM; what the scripting language can do is extremely limited. But Babylon’s team managed to build staking within these constraints. They used Taproot Schnorr signatures and the MAST structure to pack the trigger conditions for staking, delegation, and slashing into Bitcoin scripts. David Tse is a Stanford professor.
