I re-read the technical documentation on Trustless Bitcoin Vaults (TBV) from @BabylonLabs_io over the past couple of days. I originally just wanted to confirm the redemption process, but I ended up getting stuck on the word “translation” for a long time. I even flipped through the pages of BitVM3 back and forth twice, then walked through the official flowchart again. At first, I thought I might have missed a part of the Bitcoin Script. Later, I realized that the “translation” mentioned by the official source doesn’t fundamentally change data transmission—it changes the way Bitcoin verifies that external events have actually occurred.
Previously, I always believed the biggest challenge for BTC to be used in more financial applications was cross-chain interoperability and custody. But the more I researched, the more I found that I’d been misunderstanding things from step one. What Bitcoin can’t do isn’t receiving external information. What Bitcoin can’t do is verifying whether an event that already happened on the Host Chain is actually true. Whether lending is completed, whether liquidation is triggered, and whether redemption conditions are satisfied—all of that happens outside Bitcoin consensus. Bitcoin won’t change the rules for spending UTXOs just because someone says, “It has already been completed.”
When I got to this point, I almost entirely scratched out my earlier notes and rewrote them. What TBV truly solves isn’t moving BTC into another system. Instead, it converts events that have already happened on the host chain—and have already been proven—into proofs that Bitcoin can verify, so that they can satisfy the pre-defined Script spending conditions. From start to finish, Bitcoin doesn’t understand any smart contracts, and it doesn’t change any consensus rules. It always decides whether UTXOs can be spent solely based on proofs it can verify.
Only then did I finally understand why @BabylonLabs_io has been building TBV around BitVM3. It wasn’t trying to turn Bitcoin into a smart contract platform. It’s making it possible— for the first time—for Bitcoin to respond to native BTC spending based on externally proven events. TBV doesn’t extend Bitcoin’s execution capability; it expands the boundary of Bitcoin’s ability to verify and respond to external facts. When I look back at the whole design now, I realize this is the most core innovation of TBV—and also the easiest one to overlook. $BABY #baby
