A few days ago, I was整理資料 in the hard drive and came across a BTC research folder I hadn’t opened in a long time. Inside, I had notes on some cross-chain schemes I’d looked at before. Back then, my biggest takeaway was this: if Bitcoin wants to enter more financial scenarios, it seems like it has to “move”—either transforming into another asset form or handing control over to some system to manage it.

While researching @BabylonLabs_io at night, I reopened the documentation for Trustless Bitcoin Vaults (TBV). I originally just wanted to confirm how it differs from ordinary BTC yield products. But when I got to the section describing the Vault structure, I paused.

When I first saw the term “Vault,” my immediate reaction—like many others—was: is this just another BTC yield strategy?

However, as I gradually pulled apart the design in the document, I realized TBV isn’t mainly focused on “how to make BTC generate more yield.” Instead, it’s tackling a more fundamental question: when BTC is brought into more financial contexts, can the user’s control over it still be retained?

Many past BTC application proposals have a core logic of transferring BTC into another set of systems. Whether it’s token wrapping, cross-chain bridges, or custody-based models, fundamentally, they all require some intermediate party to attest to the asset’s state. This approach does improve usability, but it also introduces an additional layer of trust assumptions.

TBV’s design philosophy is much closer to Bitcoin’s native logic. It uses Bitcoin Script to build Vaults, locking BTC state through Taproot-related mechanisms. The assets themselves remain on the Bitcoin network. Moreover, each Vault corresponds to an independent UTXO, rather than pooling all funds into one pot. This isolation design left a strong impression on me.

I think the most值得关注 aspect of TBV is that it tries to solve the problem of information connection between BTC and external financial systems. Bitcoin itself can’t understand application states on another chain. So the key isn’t simply moving BTC around—it’s establishing a way for external protocols to verify BTC state.

Of course, TBV still faces many challenges before large-scale adoption: actual integration costs, verification efficiency, and the security model all need to be tested in real funding environments.
