Bitcoin's role in DeFi, and why native collateral matter
Looked into why native BTC collateral is being treated as a big deal right now, beyond just "new Babylon product."
Bitcoin is the largest asset in crypto by a wide margin, but very little of it actually participates in DeFi. The reason isn't lack of demand, it's that using BTC in DeFi has historically meant wrapping it or bridging it — both of which add a trust layer on top of Bitcoin that Bitcoin itself doesn't have. Bridge and custodian failures are a large chunk of crypto's worst hacks, and wrapped BTC concentrates a lot of value behind a small number of these trust points.
Babylon's answer is Trustless Bitcoin Vaults (TBV): native BTC locked directly on Bitcoin, usable as collateral elsewhere without that extra layer. The first application is native Bitcoin-backed borrowing with Aave v4 — deposit native BTC, borrow against it on Ethereum.
If it works as intended at scale, it's a meaningfully different model than "wrap it and hope the bridge holds." Worth watching how it performs once real usage stress-tests it, not just the design on paper.
