According to a report by The Block citing Foresight News, the Crypto Advocacy Organization Digital Chamber of Commerce (TDC) has filed a lawsuit against Illinois in state court to challenge a recent digital asset transaction tax bill passed by the state. The bill was signed into law last month as part of Illinois’ fiscal year 2027 budget plan. It proposes a 0.2% tax on digital asset transactions starting January 2027, which industry insiders have dubbed the “toughest digital asset tax in the U.S.”
TDC stated in a lawsuit that spans up to 32 pages that Illinois separately taxes digital assets due to technological differences, amounting to discriminatory treatment of specific technologies. The association emphasized that it is not seeking special treatment, but rather that “properties with identical economic attributes should receive equal treatment regardless of what technology is used in their ownership records, transfers, or settlement.” TDC has more than 250 members worldwide, including Anchorage Digital, Chainlink Labs, and the owners of the New York Stock Exchange, ICE.
