How Bitcoin Could Secure the Proof-of-Stake World? People often say Bitcoin's biggest job is to be a store of value. I used to think that was the whole story. Then I started reading Babylon's Bitcoin Staking paper, and it made me think about Bitcoin in a different way. Instead of only sitting in wallets, could Bitcoin also help strengthen other blockchain networks while staying on its own chain? What I find interesting is that Babylon isn't trying to change how Bitcoin works. The idea is to let Bitcoin remain on the Bitcoin network while using its economic strength to help support Proof-of-Stake blockchains. That feels very different from moving $BTC through bridges or handing it over to someone else. I like this vision because it builds on what Bitcoin already has instead of asking it to become something new. If even a small part of Bitcoin's idle capital could help improve the security of PoS networks, it could open the door to a completely new use case for BTC. Of course, this is still an early idea, and there's a long way to go before we know how widely it will be adopted. But I think it's exciting to see people exploring new ways for Bitcoin to contribute without changing its core principles. Do you think Bitcoin's future is only about holding value, or could helping secure the Proof-of-Stake world become one of its biggest roles? @babylonlabs_io #baby $BABY {spot}(BABYUSDT)

Look, I've spent two decades watching crypto promise to make idle assets "more productive." Most of the time, it just makes the system harder to understand.

Babylon says Bitcoin holders can stake their BTC without giving up self-custody while helping secure proof-of-stake blockchains. It sounds clever. That's exactly why I'm cautious.

I've seen this movie before.

The problem Babylon claims to solve is real enough. Smaller PoS networks often struggle to attract enough stake to make attacks prohibitively expensive, while trillions in Bitcoin value mostly sits idle. Babylon wants to connect those two worlds without wrapping Bitcoin or handing it to a custodian.

On paper, that's an improvement.

But here's the catch.

Every time crypto claims it has removed risk, it usually means the risk has moved somewhere else. Instead of trusting a bridge or a custodian, you're now trusting another protocol, another set of cryptographic assumptions, another economic model and another governance process. The Bitcoin stays in your wallet, but the system around it becomes far more complicated.

Let's be honest. Complexity has never been crypto's friend.

Then there's the incentive question. Who benefits most if Babylon succeeds? Bitcoin holders earn rewards. Validators earn fees. Early investors hope the BABY token appreciates. Everyone has a financial incentive to tell you this is the next major piece of blockchain infrastructure.

That doesn't mean they're wrong. It does mean you should ask harder questions.

Bitcoin became the most trusted cryptocurrency by doing very little and doing it exceptionally well. Babylon is asking it to become security infrastructure for entirely different blockchain ecosystems. That's a much bigger job, with far more moving parts and many more ways for something to break.

The technology might work exactly as intended.

The harder question is whether adding another layer of infrastructure actually makes crypto saferโ€”or simply gives the next failure a more sophisticated explanation.

Could SpaceX upend the worldโ€™s traditional communication networks?
The cost and time required for SpaceX to build a nationwide action network on its own may be too high and too long. But major wireless telecom carriers can only hope that their competitors wonโ€™t betray them. Muskโ€™s SpaceX has been heavily promoting its grand telecom market blueprint. Since T-Mobile and Sprint merged in 2020, the U.S. wireless communications market has maintained a stable oligopoly structure. But recently, investors have been worried that Muskโ€™s SpaceX plan could upend the marketโ€™s previously stable order for telecom services. SpaceX (SPCX)โ€™s Starlink business currently mainly targets rural areas. However, the companyโ€™s May initial public offering prospectus shows that its Starlink mobile plan also aims to massively penetrate suburban and city markets, with the goal of providing better network connectivity than ground-based cell towers. Building such a network sounds easy but is difficult in practice: it requires a great deal of time and spectrum resources. And this also assumes that SpaceX is willing to carry out extensive procurement and construction work itself. Its other option is to reach an agreement with one of the existing major operators to buy network capacity. Such an agreement is likely to trigger a fierce industry-wide price war and a customer battleโ€”which is also the main reason the three major operators have vowed not to sign such cooperation deals.

Senior executives at traditional wireless telecom providers generally dismiss the threat from Starlink. T-Mobile US (TMUS) CFO Peter Oswaldic told MarketWatch earlier this week: โ€œSpaceXโ€™s neighborhood-focused satellite constellation will never be an effective competitive threat to a mobile network.โ€ Verizon Communications (VZ) CEO Dan Schulman added during the companyโ€™s quarterly earnings call on Friday: โ€œThatโ€™s basically impossible, because of the limits of physical law.โ€ โ€œItโ€™s very difficult for a satellite provider to offer services comparable to our broadband services.โ€

Even so, investor unease has been evident in recent months. Since SpaceX filed its IPO application publicly in May, AT&T (T)โ€™s stock price has fallen 8%, Verizonโ€™s has dropped 8% in the same period, and T-Mobileโ€™s has fallen 10%. SpaceX is not the only threat facing these wireless operatorsโ€”they also have to deal with higher interest rates and intense price competition among carriers. But a Morningstar analyst says they doubt SpaceXโ€™s threat is the primary reason behind valuation pressure.

Telecom companies arenโ€™t afraid. The wireless industry is dominated by a small number of large companies for good reason. Effective competition is costly: it requires ongoing participation in spectrum auctions and continuous investment to strengthen network competitiveness. According to MoffettNathanson analyst, the path to SpaceXโ€™s grand connectivity vision is filled with multi-billion-dollar hurdles and will take decades to catch up. Their recent research highlights that Starlinkโ€™s satellite spectrum capacity still falls far short of whatโ€™s needed for terrestrial connection speeds. Even if SpaceX spent $19.6 billion last fall to buy 65MHz of spectrum from EchoStar (ECHO), its low-band and mid-band spectrum capabilities still lag far behind the three major operators. MoffettNathanson estimates that the three major operatorsโ€™ spectrum capacity is still 10 times that of SpaceX. Low-band spectrum can transmit over long distances and penetrates well, but it is slower. Mid-band is faster and supports more data transmission, but it covers shorter distances and has weaker ability to penetrate thick walls. Wireless operators need a balanced spectrum portfolio in order to effectively meet customer needs.
