Odaily Planet Daily reports that Citrini analyst Jukan said in a post on the X platform that the world’s top three storage chip manufacturers have stopped developing in-house Compute Express Link (CXL) controller designs and instead adopted chips designed by external fabless companies.
Samsung Electronics, SK hynix, and Micron have all scaled back or canceled plans to commercialize CXL expansion device controllers. Micron was the first to stop developing its own controller and adopted PrimeMass’s solution; SK hynix has also notified its main partners that it will terminate its internal CXL controller development projects and reassign relevant personnel to the processing-in-memory (PIM) direction. Samsung Electronics, meanwhile, uses its in-house CXL controllers only within its R&D teams for research; for external products, it is said to procure controllers from fabless suppliers. Industry insiders say Samsung has removed its in-house controllers from official commercialization programs, keeping them only for frontier R&D projects.
